Pitchforks, Spray paint and fences.

Progress continues on the backyard. Today after an epic trip to Menards (and a disappointing dim sum lunch) we returned to dominate the backyard.

I destroyed two grape vines (vile things) then proceeded to rip up all the dirt where our garden is going to be. Of course halfway through the backbreaking pitchforking Quan was nice enough to tell me we own a tiller. Doh. The rest went much quicker.

Tilled and ready to go

We spraypainted a perfectly good black fence white because my lovely fiance thinks black fences look like cemetaries. Ok, I suppose.

Hours later, it looks like this. It is short, but not so short that our shorter dog can get over it. We win.

Quan proud of his fence put-togethering skills and his OCD spray painting prowess.
Success!

Next step: raised beds for veggies!

An experiment in pruning.

I promised Quan I would make an effort to be a better blogger and what better thing to blog about than the triumph I have had over the unwieldy raspberry bushes in the backyard?

At first, I decided I was going to pull them out but a summer full of raspberry cake convinced me they were worth keeping. So, in an effort to get their unruliness under control I did some internet research and learned how to prune them. Sort of. In reality I didn’t quite understand what the heck the internet was talking about so I interpreted my own way and gave it a shot.

Raspberries 1

So, we’ll call this an experiment in pruning. Will it grow back? Will there be more raspberries? Less? Will there be any at all or did I kill the whole bush (as I’ve been known to do with bushes around here). We shall see.

Raspberries 2

I have decided to run a sort of experiment. On the far left we have super pruned back stalks of raspberries and on the right also super pruned but left tall rather than cut down. I have no clue which is right but I imagine in about four or five months I will have a better clue. Like I said, it’s an experiment.

In cleaning up said raspberry patch I can now say we no longer have these things in the backyard:

-giant buried pieces of chicken wire
-corks for ziggy to eat then throw up all over our house
-random pieces of tile
-burnt pieces of wood
-a lot of old leaves
-dead raspberry stalks

even if they don’t grow back I consider this a success.

mo' manly

There’s been complaints from some of my friends that my man cave is not manly enough. I don’t disagree. Part of the problem is that we spent all of our mula building out the basement so we don’t have the funds to decorate yet. But until we do, Ramon (Zara’s dad) helped me give the space a little testosterone boost. Thanks for the boxing bag, future father-in-law!

The man cave is finally in usable shape. It’s not perfect yet, but it’s getting there. The addition of Netflix on the PS3 helps. So did a huge shopping spree at f’n IKEA. I look forward to having a poker night soon…

Even with football on, I was drawn into the kitchen to see the queen in action. I’m not sure what she’s making, but it smells good and I know I’ll enjoy it.
